Longer Shroud for a Rainstorm Empty Longer Shroud for a Rainstorm

Post by Saddlemountain Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:30 pm

Rainstorms originally had a shroud about 2.5" longer than the carbine rifles now sold. That 2.5" made a considerable difference in sound suppression. I made a long style shroud out of 1" carbon fiber tube. It has upgraded internals that divert more air into the rear of the shroud. With an effective shroud the gun is quiet so it needed a depinger. I machined one out of aluminum. Now the gun puts out more power that a Marauder and is quieter than a Marauder.

    Nice!

Well, I'm a little biased about this one. I know this particular AG like I do my own . . . Ha! Smile

Anyway, I thought I'd add in this little bit:

Just for kicks one day I sat down at the bench and checked out what a grouping it would do. I knew that it was firing off to the left but I deliberately left that so that one could see the POI better. Of course, after that sitting I corrected the POI zeroing in the scope.

Now, I'm not the best shot in the world, even on the bench. I'm one of those that can shoot free hand when I have to---especially on the fly. It's hard for me to just sit and aim even with the monkey bags holding the air gun for me. And too, at each end of the magazine, this one holds ten rounds, I'd forget to reload so I'd loose a shot and HPA. but check out the chrony numbers! I actually turned it down a little to get that sort of FPS.

The pellets used were Kodiak .22 at 21.14 grain. I've found that these are awesome in this Rainstorm. I can shoot the Eun Jin 28.5 out of it and get a great grouping as well but I don't like the arch you get with the heavier pellet. Screws me up on near to far shooting on the fly. I hunt with mine and I'm constantly having to adjust from a few feet to several yards.

The distance these groupings were shot is is *35* yards measured off exactly about 3 feet from the end of the barrel so you could add a yard in there technically but I leave it at that. I had the chrony set up a good five feet from the end of the muzzle of the Rainstorm.

Let's see . . . any more specs I need to include to get a good idea of what I'm sharing here? I don't think so.

Oh, yea, one more thing . . . The bull's eye on these targets is about the size of this capital "O" or perhaps a tad bit bigger. The whole target, each single one, is about the size of a quarter. I have a 3-12x56 AO with speed focus dial on it (really helps this one eyed old man in aiming: I've got this habit of reaching up with my left thumb as I pull to aim---doesn't work for everybody but me, well, I'm real happy with it. Too it can give me a good report on actual yardage.

So, without further adieu, here are the pics . . .

Pretty cool, huh? most of my shots were one hole shots and the paper just kept ripping. I pulled these shots off pretty much as fast as I could. I have extra magazines and had them preloaded for the event.

And, lastly, this is one of the quietest AGs I've ever shot. VERY back yard friendly. The DBs are actually a little better that it would appear. I'm not going to get into the numbers of it and try to explain. I'll save that for another day. Suffice it to say that you can't hear me shoot it if you are inside your home and me in your back yard. Plus Will is working on making it quieter for me. Pretty soon it will be as quiet as my Infinity . . .

    I'll post on the Infinity next . . .

Big thanks to Saddle Mountain Gun Smith! Great work!

    The hog dropper:
Same Longer Shroud for Career Infinity

At least I hope to one day! That's my dream for this one and I may be able to now that I've got in touch with long lost cousins down in Tallahassee Florida. This is a power house of an AG. Shooting six shot cylinders and Eun Jin 32.4 grain at 933 FPS or better, it's got a LOT of FPE. At again, my favorite zero, 35 yards I can still hunt squirrel with it but I don't when I have my other AGs available. I hope to one day land a big old sow hog with a clean shot between the eyes or some other head shot. I'm pretty sure I could land a shot through the heart and still take 'em down but I'd rather not chance the inhumane pain the critter would suffer if I missed. I can get about 18 shots out of one fill of 2 bar. Of course, the power drops off at the end of that many shots but it's still a good 12 shooter at good FPE.

I haven't done the shot grouping thing with this one. I want to do a single shot like one of the other members did here and post it. Probably do the chrony thing at the same time. but I just haven't had time. Life's been busy for yours truly here of late. Bout had a heart attack too but that's another story.

This is the absolute quietest AG I've ever shot: Period. It's hard to get a DB test with it unless you aim at the sky because the impact of the pellet always picks up. I've got to get another DB meter and when I do I'll post the results. Will's done a lot of work to this one. And it is SUPER light as well. It's fitted with a 4-16x56 Scope with an AO quick adjust on it. Again, this is real handy for this old one eyed guy.

I did, at one time, have a LDC on the end of it. but I kept getting asked, "is that a LDC?" and then I'd get into the conversation I didn't want to have, even with my friends that don't seem to understand that an AG is NOT a fire arm.

Go with a shroud, if you can. If done by the right guy, you'll be VERY glad you did!

So, on to the gun smith's own words and some pics. Sorry my staging isn't as good but I worked with what I had . . .

The breech was raised to allow fitting of a full length 1” Carbon Fiber shroud. All the shroud baffles, spacers, support collars front and rear, and air diverter were precision turned on a lathe so they line up with the bore. The design forces a lot of air rearward to make use of the full length volume. The rear portion of the shroud has hi tech sound suppression material (scotch brite pads) inside.

And, of course, here's Sam, giving me that look of "hey, bud, I'm watching you so just you get it right!" He's like that though. He's got to know what you are doing. He'll sit and watch me and try to figure it out and all the time he gets these wrinkles going on in his forehead . . . comical. Hours and hours of free entertainment, folks!
