[solved]Electric Wheelchair Batteries Empty Electric WheelChair Batterires

Post by Squirrel Tue Jun 14, 2011 8:12 am

Recently, my chair started to die off a lot faster than it should. I did run it down a couple of times but I didn't think that would kill the batteries.

It's supposed to go for 11 miles. Now, I can barely make it to a doctor's appointment at the VA hospital (huge place). But the time I go from the parking lot to the doctor's office within the hospital, and before I can get straight back to the truck to put it back on the rear lift, she's barely crawling.

Anyone know a fix for this or a place I can get batteries for a good price? They are god awful expsensive.

    Thanks

I buy them for my sisters chairs occasionally, always the best prices are on line by far. I use pricegrabber.com and Google. Tom

Oh yeah, you may want to do that sooner rather than later, low batteries can cause motor problems.

How old are the batteries? How about the motor, could it be worn out? Tom

Hey Squirrel I don't know anything about wheelchair batteries but you might let them discharge and then give them a full charge before using it. Sometimes it works, depends on the type of battery they use. I had an inverter that had a built in battery do the same thing, I had to run something off the inverter as I charged it to get the power back up.
Age is all important it might just be that they need replacing. Remember what I had told you about keeping that LDC money for an emergency my friend, it may just be that time, lol All the best JC

This particular chair is a little over a year old. I did run it down a few times and too, I've tried running it down and then charge for days on end. Still dies off way to soon. Guy that delivered it said that if I ever let the batteries get down to a certain point then, and I quote, "It's all over". I think I may just have to buy some but I can hold off maybe a month or two for it considering that I just don't go many places. But around here I'm still in the juice department.

    Thanks for the replies.

yeh Squirrel some batteries are that way, I think they do it on purpose to get more sales, we all let out batteries get low at some time or other, they should build in a protection circuit to prevent them from getting so low it kills the battery life. Of course we all know they will never do that, it makes too much sense and would lose them valuable income, never mind the poor guy in the chair who has to cough up his hard earned cash for the new batteries. Do some searches my friend and try and find the most competetive price you can, look at output and warranty info as well don't just look for the cheapest, they often work out to be the most expensive, all the best, JC

An't that the god's awful truth? On all counts.

I'm going to call SSD and see if they will support battery replacement. SSD is the entity that bought it for me. I paid a little extra on my end to get the better chair: Once in a life time purchase for me, don't ya know.

Too, I'm going to call The Scooter Store: The place of purchase but odds are that after a year I'll pretty much be on my own. Murphy's Law, right? One day after the waranty the thing has a glitch. Welcome to *my* world Rolling Eyes

Ah, if you can't laugh at it, what good is it?

But I can't keep up the pace of my life the way I have been without it. Starting to really catch it pretty bad on account of not using it more.

But I should be able to make bills though in regard to that other thing.

    Laters all, appreciate the help!

Will check out Bizrate as well!

Squirrel most reputable company's would still honor something a few days out of warranty. Some company's can not wait for the warranty to expire but larger company's are more concerned with the bad press it might get them and good PR is what keeps the big company's big and profitable. I would contact them and talk to them about the possibilty of them replacing the batteries, or maybe covering part of the cost, but I do have a feeling that consumables like batteries are not usually covered under warranty. It does not hurt to try though, good luck my friend, take care JC.

my father has an electric he got through the V.A., the first set of batts only lasted about a year. we asked the V.A. about it and they said to take it to some place in Appleton. we did and they replaced the batts on site. the V.A. paid 100% . talk to your rehab dept. at the hospital, they'll most likely be able to help you. the second set has been good for over 5 yrs., now. i think it's because the chairs sit in a warehouse without being maintained, then get a quick charge before they ship them out. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted.

Like I told you before, send that thing out here. I still have that turbo from a 500 HP cummins I can hook you up with I am sure someone could put some sort of MUFFLER on the noise end to pipe it down a bit. I know for a fact I can weld a nice wheelie bar on the back end just to keep you looking up into those trees for squirrels.
In all seriousness I would contact the battery manufacture and see what the warranty is on those things. And as you are talking to them remind them of your theory: One Shot One Dispatch! That might push them off top dead center.

You kill me, Randy . . . lol!

Maybe a little slip of my PTSD issues and the fact that I'm an air gun toting garden thieving tree rat killer and that I've about shot out most of the easy pickens 'round here? Suspect

Yea, right, they'd be out here in white coats! And in droves! affraid

Got me interested though, like those Cummings! Whoba, WHOBA, rumble, rumble . . . S-t-r-o-n-g 'uns for sure!

    Squirrel,
I use a lead acid wheel chair battery in my two-seater 85 HP airplane to start it because they are sealed. I found out they last a lot longer on a battery minder so I always have one on my plane. I got my last one at discount battery store for about $50 nearby.

I'll check with Batteries Plus here to see if that one will work. They know everything about batteries here. I keep putting off the call to SSD about the issue but today I ran out of juice only after a few trips in and out of the house. Good thing I want out on a mission someplace.

No choice now. I'll check that out. I don't know how big that is but the one in my chair is huge. The chair, with me in it, weighs 420 lbs. It's a toe breaker for sure and the batteries most comprising most of the bulk of the weight.

But by not using more than I should I'm starting to pay the price physically and that's not fun. Gotta get the thing dealt with. (said the king of procrastination)

Thanks Stub, I really appreciate that!

There is a company called Gruber power who sell on eBay. I've bought batteries from them and their prices were much better than the local wheelchair store I used to use. Shipping wasn't too bad either considering the weight of batteries.

    Hope that helps.

Now this is the kind of post we were talking about! cheers

I checked out the link and quite frankly, I thought that the cost of the batteries would be *much* higher. I actually may be able to swing this next month. And just in time for some missions at the VA as well!

    Thank you dragon! Smile

Note, Dragon: In the Welcome Mat Range, there is a post on how to do this if you have problems, but in the right upper hand corner of each post, except those that you make personally, there is a plus and a negative sign. You can vote for that post in a positive or negative way using those buttons. This adds to or takes from the reputation points of the poster you are voting upon. You'll see a bar in the upper right hand corner once you have voted.

If you will notice, I'm going to give you a positive vote for this post about the batteries. Each and every one of us has this ability here, not just mods and admin.

    Thanks for your help, Dragon!

Post by Abda Wed Jul 06, 2011 8:12 pm

Okay, procrastination over and done with. I called Medicare today.

Good news. As Long as a medical supplier is Medicare enrolled, they'll pay for 80% of it. Great as the batteries will cost me 150 bucks plus 8% tax minus 10% off the top for my being a disabled vet. Still, that's close to 300 bucks if I did it on my own.

So I was given a list of suppliers. I didn't want to go through the Scooter Store. And you'll see why.

So, I call them up, "Sure! We'll get you squared away! First, there is the loaner fee, the service fee, the this fee, the that fee, etc, etc.

A local outfit wanted a total $565.00. That's just to replace the batteries and install them. They keep the old ones. Hmmm.

But no all that other fees stuff.

Still waiting on the service guy to get back with me to schedule but I told them specifically that I'd take the chair there so no fee for on site like they wanted. Then they wanted to give me a chair for a loan while they worked on mine seeing as how they couldn't promise a time to get mine back to me and, of course, I pay by the time that is first billed via Medicare.

The local place says I gotta pay up front then they file. Uh, uh.

Then I set 'em straight. It takes only a few minutes to change out the batteries and I don't need none of that other stuff so do it my way or I'll go elsewhere.

You want to know where our tax dollars are disappearing to? Crap like that. It's a scheme and THATS what needs to be fixed: Not the Medicare system, just those that abuse it like that.

I'm burned up about it right now. Mad
